Selling a Porsche with a PDK gearbox fault

PDK warning or gearbox fault? Find out what to tell a buyer, when a specialist repair merits a look and how to arrange a sale if your Porsche cannot move.

A transmission warning appears, the car refuses a gear, or a workshop suggests a replacement gearbox. If you were already thinking about selling your Porsche, you now have a harder question: how much investigation should you pay for before offering it to a buyer?

You can ask for an offer with a PDK fault still unresolved. Be precise about what has happened and what a workshop has confirmed. You do not need to describe a warning message as a failed gearbox, or pay for a repair simply to make an initial enquiry.

Confirm which gearbox and fault you have

PDK is Porsche's dual-clutch transmission. It is not the name for every automatic gearbox fitted to every Porsche. Supply the registration, model, year and mileage so a specialist can identify the car correctly.

Porsche Westlake's transmission guidance identifies delayed shifts, poor gear engagement and limp-home behaviour as reasons for a technician to assess the transmission. These symptoms do not, on their own, establish which component needs replacing.

Write down the exact dashboard message and when it appears. Does it happen from cold, after a journey, when selecting reverse or only intermittently? Keep an existing diagnostic report and the original fault codes if the workshop has supplied them. A screenshot of a forum discussion about a similar car is not a diagnosis of yours.

Do not attempt a road test to reproduce a serious fault for a buyer. Follow the vehicle's warning instructions and ask the workshop or recovery operator whether it can be moved safely.

A replacement quote is worth understanding

Before treating a full gearbox replacement as the only option, ask what the diagnosis shows and whether a specialist repair is suitable for that particular unit.

For example, Revolution Porsche describes repairs to certain PDK sensors, valve bodies and solenoids. That establishes that repair routes exist for some faults. It does not mean every PDK gearbox can be repaired in the same way or for the same price.

If you seek a second opinion, send the report first. Ask whether the specialist works on your gearbox version, what further testing costs and what evidence would make a repair unsuitable. This is more useful than collecting prices for jobs with different scopes.

Check whether a quotation includes removal and refitting, fluids, setup, testing and VAT. Ask what the warranty covers and whether the price changes if additional damage is found.

Decide how much more diagnosis is useful

A written diagnosis can reduce uncertainty for both a repairer and a buyer. It does not follow that every extra hour of investigation will increase your sale proceeds by the same amount.

Ask for an initial as-is assessment before approving expensive dismantling solely to help a sale. You can then compare that route with the diagnostic work proposed. A buyer may still need an inspection, and an early estimate should not be mistaken for an unconditional offer.

If you want to keep the car, a well-defined repair may be the better outcome. If you want to sell, compare what you would actually receive after repair and selling costs with the offer for the car now. Our repair-or-sell guide explains that comparison in more detail; the same cost questions apply even though the component is different.

Give a buyer a usable description

An enquiry that says only “PDK broken” leaves important questions unanswered. Include:

  • The model, year, registration and current mileage.
  • The warning message and symptoms, including whether the fault is intermittent.
  • What has been diagnosed, by whom, and any written estimate.
  • Whether the car starts, selects gears and can roll; say if you do not know.
  • Service records, previous transmission work and any modifications.
  • Other known faults, damage and the car's current location.

Keep observations separate from conclusions. “Reverse will not engage; diagnosis pending” is clearer than “needs a new gearbox” when nobody has established that.

The transmission fault is only part of the assessment. Specification, history, mileage, bodywork and completeness also need to be considered. There is no reliable fixed percentage to deduct from a healthy car's asking price for every PDK problem.

If the car is stuck in a garage or cannot select neutral

Tell the buyer before collection is booked. Access to a workshop ramp, basement or narrow driveway can affect the equipment and arrangements needed. Send photographs of the access as well as the vehicle.

Do not try to force the selector or improvise a towing method. The recovery operator needs the exact model and current condition to plan the move. If a workshop has removed the transmission, confirm where it and the loose parts are stored and whether they are included in the sale.

Agree any workshop balance, storage charges and release arrangements before the collection date. A sale agreement and permission to release the car are separate things if a third party currently holds it.

Request an assessment of your Porsche

You can request a valuation using the current website form. Tell us about the PDK fault and the collection postcode, and have any diagnostic paperwork ready for the follow-up.

We buy directly and also work with specialist buyers. Before proceeding, establish who is buying, whether the offer is subject to inspection, what is included and the collection arrangements. The agreed payment must be cleared before the vehicle leaves.

You can use that offer alongside a specialist's repair proposal. The right decision depends on your car and what you want to do next, not the most alarming replacement figure you have seen online.
